Bromley council to discuss Cray Wanderers FC stadium proposal

COUNCILLORS are set discuss Cray Wanderers’ proposed plans to build a new stadium in St Paul’s Cray on Thursday (20).

A Bromley Council planning meeting could confirm if Cray Wanderers can build a new 5,153 seat stadium on green belt land.

Cray Wanderers FC, currently, ground share with Bromley FC at their Hayes Lane stadium.

Other proposals include: changing rooms, offices, club shops, food and bar facilities and function rooms.

Plus a fitness centre including 20m swimming pool and multi-use arena, crèche, outdoor all weather full-size football pitch, 115 bedroom hotel including restaurant, 182 residential dwellings, landscaping, widening of Sandy Lane, formation of vehicular access including roundabout, internal access roads and pedestrian routes.

The development control meeting will take place on Thursday September 20 at 7:30pm at the Bromley Civic centre.

Would be a fantastic addition to the area - IF the facilities are accessible to the local community and not just to £100 per month members.

The stadium is one thing but what about the 182 houses, 115 bedroom hotel etc. to be built on green belt land? Forgive me but I don't see many undersubscribed schools, half used hospitals, empty GP surgeries, uncongested roads etc. around so what's going to be done to accommodate the extra people, traffic, demand on utilities etc? Once upon a time a politician called Blair promised some 'joined up thinking' - pity it's still not evident in our local/national planning policy.

How short-sighted some folk are.

For a start, ask yourselves why Bromley Council closed down the perfectly-functionin
g Walsingham Secondary School at Cotmandene several years ago and never replaced it. As I gather, a park now covers the site where the girls' school once stood, whilst the boys' school is apparently now an art college.

Then there's the proposed hotel. St Paul's Cray, and in particular Sandy Lane/Ruxley, are very close to the Kent Ports to London (and vice-versa) corridor (the A20/M20). People travelling through Europe and then into Kent would undoubtedly welcome an overnight stopping point en route. An ideal place is a hotel just off the main drag; enter St Paul's Cray, stage left!

Modern-day Luddites are alive and well in the Cray Valley, it seems!
