Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee year to be marked in Hayes with village clock

TIME is ticking for a village clock which is set to be installed as a memory of the Queen’s diamond jubilee year.

Her Majesty did not stop to shop in Hayes when she visited the borough on May 15 but the village’s residents association still wants to pay a lasting tribute.

As the artist impression shows, the minute markers will be replaced by the years of her reign.

It is one of the only permanent reminders of the momentous year in the borough and Hayes Village Association is very excited about it.

The association’s diamond jubilee clock committee chairman Oliver Pereira said: “I work in Lewisham and the clock tower there was put up for Queen Victoria’s jubilee and it’s a bit of a landmark.

“It got me thinking we should do something in Hayes so I brought it up about a year ago at Hayes Village Association and there was a bit of interest.”

So far nearly £7,000 has been raised for the clock which is scheduled to be put up in Station Approach, Hayes, this autumn.

This money has come from donations from Hayes residents and businesses and schools and associations holding fundraisers including coffee mornings, cake sales and quiz nights.

Mr Pereira added: “I think we have been proved right that it is popular in the fact that the money has come in.”

Approximately £2,000 is still needed to meet the fund’s target to purchase, install and meet initial running costs.

Anyone who wants to donate can drop off a cheque at Hayes Electronics, 35 Station Approach, Hayes.

It should be made payable to Hayes Village Association and marked Clock on the back.

The final date for donations is August 31.

The clock is going to be made by Gillett & Johnston clockmakers in Bletchingley, near Croydon.
