Biggin Hill heritage centre planners want your views

THE public are invited to have their say on plans for a heritage centre at Biggin Hill.

RAF Biggin Hill was a key fighter station defending London during the Battle of Britain.

It also pioneered the development of wireless technology with ground-to-aircraft and air-to-air communication.

The Biggin Hill Battle of Britain Trust hopes to open a heritage centre to tell the story of the station by 2015 - in time for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Now a survey has been launched by the trust to seek people's views on what they would like to see in the centre, which will be located next to the Biggin Hill RAF Memorial Chapel.

Trust chairman Dennis Barkway said: "We want as many people as possible to give us their views.

"In today's world people's expectations of what should be in a centre like this are changing rapidly.

"A lot of people want hands-on experiences, others want memories. It's a difficult balance to keep."

Mr Barkway said this was a "critical" period for the trust, as it needs to submit plans to Bromley Council by the end of the month, with the results of the survey an important component.

Some of the ideas suggested so far for the centre include a 3D tunnel, an aerial dogfight and chronological history trail.

But it will cost around £3m, the majority of which will need to be raised by the trust.

As long as No public money is spent on this then the Trust can do what they want. Lets be honest how many people are going to visit this more than once if at all, Surely £3m can be spent on something that everyone can benefit from.
