8:24am Wednesday 22nd February 2012 in Bromley By Robert Fisk
KITCHEN renovations are needed just days after a mother and son moved in to their new home in Petts Wood after an unattended candle started a fire.
Heat from the candle cracked its glass container causing the burning wax to drip on to the vacuum cleaner in the kitchen of the house in Fairway.
And this then caught fire.
The smoke alarm directly above the flames did not go off as the battery is believed to have been dead and it melted in the blaze at around 5am today (February 22).
Firefighters were called to the scene after the son, who is believed to be in his 20s, woke up and tried to put water on to the fire.
Two crews from Bromley fire station dealt with the incident which they managed to contain to the one room.
The kitchen was said to be completely black because of the soot.
