Bromley Council is gearing up for snow across the borough

Bromley Council is prepared for snowfall Bromley Council is prepared for snowfall

GRITTING crews and snow clearance teams are gearing up for a busier period following the potential for snow across Bromley in the next few days.

Workers were out overnight salting 260 miles of priority routes across the borough as snow and icy road conditions are forecasted.

And today (February 3) there is precautionary salting of pavements outside schools, transport interchanges and in town centres.

For the second year running, Snow Friends resident groups will be clearing snow from their streets, which are areas not part of the council’s snow clearance operation.

Executive councillor for environment Councillor Colin Smith said: “Our gritting crews have already salted priority routes on numerous occasions this winter when frosty weather has potentially made for icy road conditions.

“Fortunately, so far, we have avoided the snows of last winter but remain on 24 hour standby to react to the changing weather conditions.

“The first 24 hours after snow fall is the critical period in snow clearance terms and we are incredibly grateful to the many volunteer Snow Friends who have pledged their support in clearing snow from residential roads to allow the gritters to focus on the priority routes.”

'Gearing up for snow' probably means that they've just thought about ordering some grit!

At least I might get to use my new snow shovel. It's been in the shed since October!

Bromley have had their salt supplies for the gritters since late summer. I know as i worked on the Snow Friends initiative.

Yep - credit where it's due! In these hard times I reckon Bromley has done all it reasonably can to try to mitigate the effects of any snow fall. Money will always be a limiting factor, however, and it seems to me that they're all too often 'damned if they do and damned if they don't'. As for those who're claiming Bromley's done nothing, well that's utter tosh. To complement their own gritting teams, Bromley launched the Snow Friends scheme quite some time ago and we arranged a large group to which Bromley provided snow shovels and some salt for use by residents months ago! All it took was a few phone calls. Recognising that the Council can't cover the whole borough if/when the snow comes and has to prioritise its efforts, the idea is for residents to help clear their own streets and pavements. Frankly it's not much more than what residents used to do routinely when I was a child but the council at least provides some equipment etc. to assist. If a few residents in each street do their bit and more people try to limit the use of their cars to essential journeys only then there's no need for total chaos to ensue. However it often only takes one broken down, stuck, abandoned or poorly parked car to block a road and cause an area to grind to a halt. The Council can be blamed for a lot of things but they can't be blamed for that.
