ORPINGTON: Former RAF volunteer celebrates 100th birthday

A VISITOR to a centre for the elderly who began working there as a volunteer has celebrated his 100th birthday.

In 1971 Alfred Proctor started as a driver at the Orpington Age Concern centre’s former Civic Hall location in Orpington.

Since 1982 the father-of-two has been a visitor to the charity’s current centre in Lych Gate Road where he saw in his centenary year over cake with friends.

Mr Proctor, whose wife Hilda May Proctor died aged 88 in July last year, was born in South Woodford on September 1.

The couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 2007.

In the Second World War Mr Proctor was a rear gunner for the RAF bomber command before working as chief cashier for Nat West bank in Regent Street, London.
