TRAVEL: 'Dragging brake' caused train problems

PROBLEMS with a ‘dragging brake’ on a train in the Bromley South area caused delays for commuters this morning.

Passengers travelling on the service from London Victoria to Orpington at around 8.45am were evacuated at Bromley South and the train was taken out of service.

This caused around a 10 minute delay on some services but they have now been returned to normal.

One woman who called the paper from the station says she believed the problem was due to a fire underneath a train carriage.

A Southeastern trains spokeswoman says there may have been a burning smell or the smell of smoke caused by the brake dragging on the track.

Is this really worthy of a story?

Cant be much going on when you need to print a story about a ten minute delay on a train.

You didnt mention that the service on board cart had run out of mars bars either.

Yes, it's worth a story.

We try to keep people informed of delays on the roads or public transport. While relatively short-lived, these problems on the trains around the Bromley area would have affected lots of people travelling to work.

Simon if you think a ten minute deley affects peoples jurneys to work then I assume you dont get the train everyday, If I let a 10 delay afefect me everyday then I would be a very stressfull person.

If the NS reported every 10 min delay, there would be hundreds of 'stories' every day.

Also who the hell phones a news paper from the station to report a minor deley!

When we first put this story online earlier in the morning it was a suspected train fire when the length of delays wasn't yet known.

We do run a live website, you know.

The version here is an update to that earlier story which mops up the details and explains that it turned out to only be a minor incident.

You didn't report about the cancelled train and then delays yesterday.
Newsflash Lidls are selling goodfellas pizza for £1. Now that's news.

I agree. Its a rediculous story. Who checks the Newsshopper website for train delays. National Rail enquiries is the site for that. Thanks for the Pizza info though - I nice quick tea for when I've been delayed 10 minutes on the train x

We do our best and report on what we can. If there were delays on the trains yesterday it would have still shown up in our live travel bulletins if we didn't do a story on it.

Actually, in the past travel updates have been among our most popular articles.

Simon,

There are currently delays between London and Dartford/Gravesend. Please can you report this? Thanks

Just happened upon your message. In the future if there's anything happening which you think we might report on it's probably best to email it so someone sees it more quickly.

Looking into train delays.

There's been a problem at Orpington this afternoon and also in the Dartford/Gravesend area.

If you follow our live travel bulletins you'll see this currently on there:

Replacement bus service running on Southeastern between Dartford and Gravesend due to broken down train at Swanscombe. London Underground are accepting tickets for reasonable routes. Recovery of the train is expected to take some time, and journey times will be extended by up to 30 minutes.

just looked at you live bulletins and it only mentions the disruption between Victoria and Orpington on the Southeastern line. Did you get that message from the Southeastern website? Your a good sport Simon :)

Thanks :-)

The message about trains being delayed in Dartford/Gravesend was on our site last night. If you view the travel report via the box in the top right-hand corner of the site then this delay may not have shown up because that box is set by default to Orpington. However, if you go to newsshopper.co.uk/li you can set the location to what you want and you'll get a pretty decent travel bulletin for your area.

We also did a brief article on the site last night about the delays in Orpington and north Kent. We're obviously not going to cover every single travel problem but when we know about something and we think it's going to be of interest to people then we'll cover it. Whether people consider that to be news is up to them!

Simon, you're the web manager so you can report what ever you think is reportable, don't let porkpie and the rest of the rabble brow beat you, besides, porkpie seems too preoccupied with food to be taken seriously.
