A 59-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for illegally claiming more than £121,000 over a six-year period.

Magnus Iroegbu, of Upper Elmers End Road, Beckenham, pleaded guilty to eight offences of benefit fraud between February 2001 and May 2007.

Croydon Crown Court heard Iroegbu falsely claimed around £43,200 in housing and council tax benefits from Bromley Council and more than £78,000 in income support from the Department for Work and Pensions.

An investigation showed he had failed to declare capital and his wife was in full-time employment.

The council and the DWP are working together to recover the cash from assets through legal proceedings.
