BROMLEY paid tribute to war heroes who sacrificed their lives for King and Country during the Battle of Britain.

Organised by Bromley Council and the RAF, the borough marked the air campaign’s 70th anniversary with the release of 54 doves in memory of the 544 pilots who died.

Around 12,000 people turned out on the day, including Dame Vera Lynn who attended a chapel service and also events at Biggin Hill air field.

Bromley High Street was adorned with anniversary flags and banners while Market Square played host to a life-size replica Spitfire as well as celebratory music and dancing from the 1940s.

Event organiser Kay Coulton said: “We are delighted so many residents and visitors turned up to honour the valour of those who fought for our freedom in the Battle of Britain.”

Dame Vera wasn't in Bromley. She was meant to attend the parade, but couldn't make it. So did she come to the Chapel?
