MOTTINGHAM: Landowner fined for shopping parade rubbish

BROMLEY Council is claiming victory after fining a company for refusing to clear up rubbish from a shopping parade.

Complaints about Beaconsfield Parade in Mottingham flooded into Bromley Council last year after fly tipped rubbish began to pile up in the area.

The council approached landowner Headstates Limited who, the local authority says, made no effort to clear up the rubbish.

With no end in sight, council staff cleared up the mess themselves and put up secure fencing.

Now Headstates Limited has been fined £10,750 and ordered to pay the local authority costs of £11,382 after pleading guilty to breaching the Environment Protection Act.

Council leader Councillor Stephen Carr said: “This was an extremely protracted case which could have been solved very quickly if the owners of the land had reacted appropriately.

“Landowners must remove rubbish irrespective of whether it belongs to them or is dumped by someone else.”

Shame it didn't include the asbo gang, who have also been piling up in the same spot.... Maybe their parents should be fined too, for fly tipping children in a public place..!!

Fly tipping and general rubbish dumping often comes from the immediate locality. People need education about disposing of their rubbish, and should be fined when caught. Bring back the old fashioned dustman, he took everything. Now with our posh wheelie bins, the rubbish that they won't take ends up being dumped and that's bad for all. How about a once a month "Spring Clean Day" when all the rubbish that can't going in the wheelie can be put out, and that old fashioned dustman can tour the streets with a big lorry taking it all away. At present, most councils charge for a special collection and some residents who don't fancy a run to the tip to save money end up dumping it.

meantime, the perpetrators of the problem (ie the fly tippers) appear to have got off scott free!

Bromley council: residents should note that we are committed to reducing waste and the use of wheeled bins has been shown to increase waste. It is possible that, in the future, we may restrict the size of acceptable containers, try using two black sacks instead of one or a thicker, better-tied sack!! Great, that will do the environment a world of good and will it stop fly tipping too ?? I doubt it..

So Waldo Road dump will then see an increase in rubbish, which Bromley council own!, it doesn't make sense, would they rather you drive to Waldo Rd to dispose of excess rubbish, polluting the air sitting in the single lane traffic jam waiting to get rid of it or non drivers/ can't be bothered's, dumping it where they please ??

I think Bexley and Greenwich have got it right....
