HEALTH: Norovirus outbreak continues

AN OUTBREAK of the norovirus has led to hospital ward closures as healthcare staff try and stop it spreading.

At the Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough, wards M7, M8 and the stroke unit are currently closed to new patients and visitors.

The South London Healthcare Trust's norovirus panel meets regularly to review the situation and wards will only be reopened after they have been deep cleaned.

Within the past week the Trust has reopened Gillies and Brook ward at Queen Mary’s Sidcup.

But Mottingham, Ellingworth, Avery Hill and Chislehurst wards remain closed.

Ward 2 is closed at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich and the Rachel and Ontario wards are closed at Orpington Hospital.

Tracey Cooper, the trust's director of infection prevention and control said: “We are very grateful to staff, patients and the public for their cooperation, support and understanding during this outbreak.

"The measures we have taken reflect how seriously the trust takes patient safety and infection prevention.”

Symptoms of the virus, which is also known as the winter vomiting bug, include vomiting and diarrhoea.

Most people recover naturally within two to three days with rest and by drinking plenty of fluids.

Dr Rachel Heathcock, from the Health Protection Agency, said: "It is too early to say whether this is the peak [of London’s norovirus season].

"There is no particular treatment for norovirus so the public can help limit the spread by staying away from their GP practice or hospital if they are unwell so they don't introduce the illness to these establishments.

“Because norovirus spreads so easily, those with diarrhoea and vomiting should avoid contact with others if possible and remain at home until 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.

“Personal hygiene must also be good so make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating and after going to the toilet.”

Anyone experiencing severe and persistent diarrhoea and vomiting should telephone their GP or NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
