A SCOUT group has had thousands of pounds worth of camping equipment stolen, just a month before a its summer expedition.

The 4th Mottingham Scout Group found thieves had made off with all of their vital camping equipment during a late-night burglary in Sandy Lane, St Mary Cray, last Thursday (June 25).

Group scout leader Jim Spencer said: “It has taken us 12 years to collect our equipment and we had just bought four brand new tents.

“I was so despondent and gutted when I found out everything had been taken.”

The 70-strong scout group is heading to Dorset on August 1 and Mr Spencer says he is now frantically borrowing equipment to make sure the trip goes ahead as planned.

The scouts normally meet in Castlecombe Youth Centre in Castlecombe Road, Mottingham.

Police have confirmed tents, a marquee, chairs, gas bottles and a trailer, all worth around £5,000, were taken in the raid.

Anyone with information should contact Bromley police on 01689 891212.
