BROMLEY: Council website could allow e-petitions

CAMPAIGNING residents could soon be able to petition the council online over contentious issues.

At a full council meeting on June 29 the council passed a motion to look into providing a space on Bromley Council’s website to post e-petitions.

The feasibility of the plan will now be assessed by the constitutional working party.

Councillor John Getgood, who supported the motion, said: “It’s about engaging residents in a more direct way.”

He added that the working group would look at how the petitions could influence the council- for instance triggering debates in meetings.

A paper petition hoping to get the council to provide free swimming to those over 60 is currently underway.

One of the organisers, Age Concern Bromley director, Maureen Falloon, said: “I think e-petitions are another new way where members of the public could have influence.”
