A flying start for pupils

A GROUP of high-flying engineers so impressed judges in a national competition, an award was created just for them.

The Year 9 pupils who attend Cooper’s Technology College, Hawkswood Lane, Chislehurst, entered the British Airports Authority (BAA) Challenge 2003, which invited entrants to design something which would provide “easy access” to airport facilities.

Aron Mayer, Amy Orr, Melissa Miles and Danielle Langley created Oscar, a cartoon character which could help the visually impaired and illiterate find their way around the airport.

Having travelled to Heathrow Airport to make their final presentation to BAA judges they were disappointed to learn they had not won the main prize but judges were so impressed they gave them a Special Commendation Award of £100 for the school.

Technology teacher Alan Day, who helped the youngsters achieve their success, said: “I am really proud of them.”
