Anyone hoping for the ‘hottest May bank holiday in 70 years’ is going to be disappointed, as a yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued.

At the beginning of the week, if you had checked the forecast, you would have seen reports of 30C heat and sunshine.

Now, however, the report has changed dramatically and we are in for an awful lot of rain, and possibly some storms.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms will affect parts of southern Britain this weekend.”

The yellow weather warning issued today covers Saturday and Sunday with the weather picking up on Monday.

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

It will, however, be quite warm with temperatures reaching at least 24C, making it particularly humid.

Clare Nasir, a Met Office weather forecaster, said we should expect some very heavy patches of rain, along with thunderstorms and the possibility of hail.
