Teachers at a primary school in Orpington will strike for a second time because of a proposal to ditch specialist staff.

Green Street Green Primary School remains tight lipped over whether it plans to dismiss Music and French specialist teachers.

Parents are furious over the rumoured redundancies and over 550 people have signed a petition against it.

Worried mums and dads have reportedly been told the future of specialist teachers will be announced on June 6.

Teachers will now strike on Wednesday, May 23, against the removal of part-time specialist teachers.

The first staff strike was held on May 9.

Former Orpington Labour candidate, Nigel de Gruchy, said: “When you examine the overall expenditure of the school these proposals for cuts do not stack up. They make neither educational nor common sense.”

Below are some comments from parents who have signed the petition.

“I want my child to have the same resources as other schools in this area."

“Children should not be compromised by funding cuts.”

“Teachers’ jobs should not be at risk because the head teacher cannot control his spending.”

“It's all very well having lovely new buildings but what use is new music facilities without a specialist teacher to inspire the children to use them.”

“Music and languages are a huge part of a child’s development. Children that learn music perform better in other key subjects, and languages are similarly important to development. These should have been prioritised over less important infrastructure projects."

“The music and language resources at Green Street Green were a large part of our decision to choose this school. It is wrong that these teachers are being made redundant because of the poor decisions of other people.”

“I know what the music and language team have achieved. It is very short sighted to remove such excellent heritage. It cannot just be 'turned back on' when money becomes available again.”

News Shopper recently reported how one concerned mum no longer had faith in the school’s head teacher.

Nobody was available from Green Street Primary to provide a comment this morning.
