An Orpington school has opened its stunning new 'library lodge'.

Author Avril McDonald, who penned the Feel Brave series of books, was on hand to cut the ribbon at Darrick Wood Infant and Nursery School's building on Wednesday (January 17).

Children, parents and staff raised £10,000 to support the building of the lodge and commission from the school's Travelling Book Fair went in to stocking it with books.

Parents at local business helped create the wooden sign, interior design and some volunteered with the organisation and storage of the books.

The school's literacy lead Penny Stephenson said: "We were keen to develop an exciting space for the children where they could listen to stories and have the opportunity to read a range of different books in a warm, welcoming environment.

"The support from the parents has been amazing and the children and staff are grateful for all their efforts and enthusiasm for the project. We can’t wait to start using it.”
