The possible extension of the Bakerloo line into Lewisham has taken another step forward with backing from residents, businesses and politicians - and calls for it to be extended further into Catford and Bromley borough.

A consultation report released this week showed widespread support for the proposals to build two new stations along Old Kent Road, one at New Cross Gate and Lewisham town centre.

Transport for London's consultation about extension of the Tube line from Elephant and Castle attracted responses from 4,819 members of the public between February and April this year.

It focused on gathering views on the locations for the four new proposed Tube stations in south-east London.

Lewisham councillors have repeated calls for the Bakerloo line to be extended further, to Catford and Hayes in Bromley borough.

Councillor Mark Ingleby welcomed the extension to Lewisham but made the point that the line extends to zone five in north London, but would stop in zone three in the south-east of the capital.

Bob Neill, MP for Bromley and Chislehurst, echoed these ideas and, according to the report, urged officials to “consider what immediate steps can be taken to reassess the viability of an extension to Bromley town centre and further scoping work”.

Lewisham Council is “extremely supportive” of the proposals, but also backed a Phase Two extension to Catford and Hayes to “improve connections” between the boroughs and increase “housing and economic growth”.

The consultation did not ask people their views on extending the route into Bromley although the report states that this has “not been ruled out”.

The extension aims to provide capacity for 65,000 extra journeys in peak times to relieve congestion on buses and National Rail services.

TfL will now assess the comments made and publish “Response to issues raised” document later this year.

The proposed scheme is estimated to be completed by 2029.
