Police scrambled to close off several roads in Beckenham after a suspicious package was reported.
Emergency services cordoned off roads around Church Avenue shortly after noon today (July 5) and evacuated several businesses following the report.
One witness told News Shopper, the package was sent to the Conservative Association – which is based in Church Avenue - and addressed to Bob Stewart, the MP for Beckenham and Penge.
Mr Stewart was in Parliament at the time.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told the News Shopper: "Police in Bromley are dealing with a suspicious package.
"Officers were called at 12.04pm on Wednesday July 5 to an address in Church Avenue, Beckenham to reports of a suspicious package.
"Some local premises have been evacuated and roads closed while emergency services deal.”
Staff from Marks and Spencer in the High Street provided bottles of cold water to officers dealing with the incident.
The roads were reopened shortly after 2.30pm after police determined the package was ‘non-suspicious’ and not a danger.
