In light of the Grenfell Tower fire that devastated hundreds of lives in North Kensington, one schoolteacher and her class made sure that they helped in any way that they could.

Andrea Hanson, 50, and her Year 4 pupils managed to raise over £130 on last Friday morning (June 23) at James Dixon Primary School in Bromley by selling refreshing lemonade drinks after appealing for others to help.

Mrs Hanson was ‘deeply saddened’ and ‘moved to tears’ by the catastrophic blaze which at least 79 residents are presumed to be dead or missing, with the death toll still expected to rise.

“I wanted to do something,” she told News Shopper.

“I found out on the news that they were no longer accepting food and clothes, so I decided to raise funds here at the school.”

After discussing the events with her class, they brainstormed ways to fundraise for those that were affected.

They made the drinks using the Smoothie Bike that was provided to the school by Bromley Council last month during Health Week (May 22 to 26), an event designed to promote awareness of healthy eating.

She said: “We decided on an affordable price and I did a mini-segment at assembly raise awareness [for the event].

“We did a dry run on Wednesday (June 21) to test our product and then sold them at morning playtime,” she added.

Mrs Hanson hopes that the efforts have inspired others at the school to join in on the cause, but also plans to build upon it by selling ice poles this week.

She remains ‘extremely proud’ of what they have achieved.
