A Bromley war memorial was destroyed this morning after a car crashed and smashed straight through it.

The Kingswood Road memorial in Shortlands was in pieces after the car mounted the platform it stood on.

The Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called to Church Street at 10.25am.

A spokesman for the Met told News Shopper a 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sammy Selvage was working in the next road over when the crash happened.

He was confronted with the scene when he tried to leave and found the road blocked.

He told News Shopper: "It's a junction which the memorial splits into two sides so they must have launched into it and over."

The memorial commemmorated local men and women who died fighting in two World Wars.

The LFB sent two fire engines from Bromley Fire Station and a fire rescue unit from Lewisham.

They made the area safe and left by 11.05am.
