Police were called to reports of a man with a gun in front of McDonald's in Orpington High Street.
Earlier reports suggested that a homeless man pulled a gun on his carers after one of them bought him breakfast at the restaurant.
The Met Police were called at 11.30am yesterday (June 20) and sent armed officers.
A police spokesman said: "We searched him and it was a phone and not a gun.
"It was a negative search.
"But it is useful that people call and let us know these things."
