Renters in south-east London are among those most at risk of being evicted, new figures reveal.

Homeless charity Shelter has pinpointed "home-threat hotspots" across the country where tenants are most in danger of losing their homes.

South-east London boroughs were all ranked in the top 20, with the study showing that Bexley, at number 9, had 2,055 renters at risk - or one in 29.

In 14th place was Lewisham, where there were 5,352 renters at risk of eviction, equivalent to one in 31.

In Greenwich, at number 16 in the ranking, there were 4,281 tenants - or one in 33 - deemed as being at risk.

And coming in at number 18 is Bromley, London's biggest borough in terms of land, with 2,655 - or one in 34 - residents who don't own their own homes and are at risk of being kicked out.

Shelter compared the total number of possession claims - the first stage in a court process which can end with the loss of a home - to the total number of renting households in the area in the last 12 months.

Nadeem Khan, helpline adviser for Shelter, said: "Every day at Shelter we hear from people who are struggling to keep up with their rent, many in total desperation after court papers land on their doormat and the threat of being evicted becomes very real."
