Cray Wanderers Football Club (CWFC) will finally have a roof over their heads as plans to build a multi-purpose stadium in Chislehurst were approved last week.

Without a stadium to call their own, the club has been leading a nomadic existence for decades, relying on other clubs to train at their grounds.

Bromley Council’s planning committee voted in favour of the scheme to build on Flamingo Park, Sidcup By-Pass Road, by a comfortable majority.

The decision will now be referred to the London Mayor and Secretary of State who will have the final say before London’s oldest football club can start building its long-awaited home.

Gary Hillman, CWFC’s chairman, told News Shopper: “I’ve been chairman for 22 years and we’ve been looking for a ground for that entire time.

“We have been ground-sharing at Bromley Football Club since 1998.

“We are the oldest club in London and we have 13 youth teams – and now we’ll actually have a home.

“After 44 years of being homeless we’re set up to go forward.

The club is expecting to share for two more years and hope to move in time for the 2018 season.

Mr Hillman says: “I want to thank Bromley’s planning committee for appreciating the community benefits and genuine common sense of our scheme to finally provide Cray Wanderers FC with a home, I would equally thank the incredible support from fans and Bromley residents to make our dream a reality.”
