A 29-year-old Bromley man has been sentenced to two years in prison for causing the death of a man by careless driving.

Grant Powell of Oldstead Road, Bromley was also disqualified from driving for three years and will be required to take an extended test.

He was sentenced today at Canterbury Crown Court having pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

He was arrested in Newchurch, Kent at 5.35pm on Tuesday April 28 2015 after crashing the Mercedes Sprinter van he was driving for a delivery company head-on into a MAZDA 5 car.

The driver of the other car was 67-year-old Bryn Davies, a building contractor from Ashford, Kent.

The court was told that Powell had made a delivery to a farm in Newchurch, turned right out of the farm and tried to make a phone call using his hands free device.

He took his eyes off the road and failed to put any steering on as he approached a small left hand bend and crossed into the opposite carriageway where he crashed head on into Mr Davies car.

Mr Davies daughter, Debbie Davies, said: "We had such a close relationship, saw each other every day especially after losing my Mum to cancer in January 2010, and now miss him terribly.

"It is very hard to accept that he has gone because of someone's careless actions.

"We hope that today brings us not only justice but also a little bit of closure. It has been a nightmare of a year."

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Scott Lynch said: "‘This death would have been avoided but for Powell’s insistence in trying to call his boss on a hands-free mobile inside the cab.

"His driving fell below the standard of a careful competent driver and he has to now live with the consequences."
