A youngster from Downham who is seriously ill donated more than £3,000 to Lewisham Hospital – in change.

Callum Ward, 12, was born with cystic fibrosis, meaning his lungs do not work properly.

A regular visitor to Lewisham Hospital, in the High Street, for treatment, he used his wheelchair to carry in £3,100 in notes and small change, much to the delight of staff.

The funds come from his mum and dad, Mike, 58, and Sharon, 52, putting on a spectacular display of Christmas lights every year.

Callum’s house, in Downderry Road, is transformed into a festive grotto, which earned the family a spot on Channel 4’s My Crazy Christmas Lights, with Callum the chosen narrator.

MORE TOP STORIES Mr Ward, a fireplace salesman, told News Shopper: “Channel 4 did documentary this year and Callum narrated the whole show. He loved it. It really boosted him.

“We do a big display outside the house, we’ve been doing it for 20 odd years.

“I just started doing it as a bit of fun, I quite like the lights.

“So I put a few on my house, it grew and grew and people said why don’t you do it for charity.

“We did a different charity every year. Then Callum came along with cystic fibrosis.”

Sandra Dodds, chairman of the Friends of University Hospital Lewisham said: “We are extremely grateful to Mick and Callum for their very kind donation.

“Callum is not only a lovely patient at our hospital but also a master of the Christmas lights which makes him very special.”

Mr Ward added: “Three grand in mostly change. It’s really heavy so normally we take it in his wheelchair because we can’t carry it.

“We’ve got £1,000 in notes and the rest in change.”

He explained Callum, a Sedgehill school pupil, off Sedgehill Road, is in need of a lung transplant.

His father said: “He’s got cystic fibrosis quite badly. He needs a transplant in the next few years.

“The problem is he doesn’t go out much because the cold air affects his lungs.

“He can’t breathe and his cough is quite serious.

“He has good days and bad days, but he’s always smiling always laughing.”

Beating their previous records for donations, the family handed the cash to the children’s ward of the hospital yesterday (February 4).

Father-of-nine Mr Ward said: “It’s the most we’ve ever raised because we’re up a back street, no one sees us.

“At Christmas we sat down to watch it, it was quite emotional.”

Despite taking two months to take the display down, the family has no intentions of stopping.
