Bromley Council is refusing to comment after an embarrassing blunder appeared on a road sign in Penge.

Eagle-eyed residents spotted a mistake on road signs just feet apart, with one saying a street is called Watermens Square, while the other – directly opposite – proclaims it is in fact Watermen’s Square.

Kingswood Road resident Daniela Noehlen, who after studying linguistics has an eye for grammar, picked up on the error when she was walking past recently.

Despite living in Penge for eight years, the 38-year-old, told News Shopper: “I have always known the old sign there, in fact I have taken a photo of it not that long ago.

“It was only the other day that I noticed the second one, with the missing apostrophe being blatantly obvious to me and thinking that this is odd.

It is unclear when the signs first appeared, but the mistake has gone unnoticed since 2014, when Google Street camera snapped the mismatched signs.

But despite repeated attempts to get to the bottom of the blunder, Bromley Council remained tight-lipped over who is behind the bungle, or how much it would cost to fix.

Ms Noehlen, originally from Germany, added: “I do think it should be fixed.

"Whether or not the apostrophe may be dying out, at this point in time it is still very much alive and the usage here simply incorrect and setting a bad example.

“I also find this argument in itself rather questionable - will it not only die out if we allow it to happen?

“I am also a stickler for consistency, so even if for some reason the place was renamed to Watermens Square, at the very least both signs should be the same.”

The question remains over which spelling is the true one.

Despite repeated attempts to contact the council, it has so far refused to comment on the mistake.
