Chislehurst MEP Janice Atkinson will not face criminal charges after allegations surfaced her assistant had tried to fiddle expenses.

Ms Atkinson was the subject of a police investigation into fraud after her assistant, Christine Hewitt, was reportedly caught on camera trying to forge a receipt.

The Sun newspaper was said to have secretly filmed Ms Hewitt trying to obtain an invoice for three times the amount of a meal, apparently with the intention of claiming it back from a Brussels fund.

The MEP was booted out of Ukip after the swindling scandal broke last March, and she was removed as a candidate for a seat in parliament in the upcoming May elections.

Her assistant was also expelled.

A spokesman from Kent police confirmed: “Following an allegation of fraud a woman who was interviewed has been informed that there will be no further action against her.
