Two Crystal Palace neighbours have raised £700 for Cancer Research in memory of Beckenham legend David Bowie.

Sparked by Bowie’s death last month, Kat Webb and Helen Moorish wanted to celebrate his life and links with the Bromley borough.

Held at the Sparrowhawk Pub in Crystal Palace, around 70 fans turned out to dance the night away to Bowie’s greatest hits, played by DJ Rose Bartlett, and raise vital donations for pioneering research in the process.

Ms Webb, 50, who is originally from Beckenham, said she jumped at the chance to support her neighbour Helen’s idea.

She told News Shopper: “She [Helen] felt she had to do something, she had to channel her grief somewhere.

“Being a large Bowie fan myself I just supported her.

“It was just so lovely that people chipped in.”

As well as dancing and singing, the Bowie fans decked the room with his iconic pictures, organised a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, and created a history board detailing his links to the borough.

Ms Webb added: “People just came along and shared their memories.

“The night was a huge success with 70 local fans attending and the event raised £700 for Cancer Research.

“We would like to thank the generosity of local business who kindly donated gifts for the raffle and providing the venue for free, as well as everyone who attended and made the night such a special evening.”

The duo presented their cheque, along with Ms Bartlett, to Alice Abrey - the shop manager at Cancer Research UK in Crystal Palace.
