Tributes have been paid to a swimming record holder from Chislehurst who passed away recently.

Colin Kirkwood, 80, was a member of the Beckenham Swimming Club for over 50 years, but sadly lost a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

His comrades have paid tribute to the father-of-three, who also held the position of president during the 1980s.

Mr Kirkwood, from Manor Park in Chislehurst, travelled the country competing in national competitions, winning many awards.

“He was also a recipient of The Edward G. Maples Memorial Trophy from the Kent ASA, awarded annually for services to the disciplines of swimming.”

The coach and referee also captained the Water Polo team back in 1964, and sat on numerous committees throughout his swimming career.

Mr Kirkwood, who was married to wife Betty, 79, for 57 years, was laid to rest at Kemnal Park cemetery last Friday (November 13).
