Brave fundraisers who walked through the night from the urban landscapes of south-east London to the Kent countryside for children’s adventure charity Wide Horizons are being invited back for more.

Around 120 budding hikers trekked in darkness from Avery Hill in Eltham to Chislehurst Common, Sidcup, Joyden’s Wood and Dartford before arriving in the North Downs in Kent on June 20 - this year’s longest day.

The ‘Nightline’ walk, supported by News Shopper, helps to raise vital funds each year to help young children across London experience life-changing adventures with Wide Horizons.

Wide Horizons is now inviting last year’s walkers, who raised around £25,000, back for more and is also looking for new recruits to take on the challenge on June 18, 2016.

With activities from pond-dipping to mountain climbing, the charity aims to inspire children with the outdoors, build their confidence and show them the future’s bright.

Mapped: The Wide Horizons Nightline walk route

A Wide Horizons spokesperson said: "By taking part in Nightline you will be providing life-changing adventures for disadvantaged children and young people.

"Your support will allow children trapped by poverty to experience the outdoors in an inspirational way; building their confidence and creating happier, healthier young people with a brighter outlook for their futures."

The charity operates eight outdoor centres offering daytime and residential courses and works with around 90 per cent of schools in the Lewisham and Greenwich boroughs.

A beautiful sunrise over the North Downs and a hot, hearty breakfast will greet walkers as they cross the finish line in Wrotham, Kent.

Ramblers can choose to walk the full 50km or complete a half-distance 25km.

Regular rest stops and a drink and snack will be available at the halfway point to keep trekkers energised throughout the night.

The entire route, which includes some of the region’s most famous trails including the Green Chain Link, London Loop, Darent Valley Path and North Downs Way, will be lit up with illuminated arrows and walking marshals will be on hand to help with any problems.

Booking is available for a shuttle bus to drive walkers back to the starting point in Eltham as they rest their weary legs.

The registration fee for Nightline is £10 and walkers are asked to raise a further £90 towards the work of Wide Horizons.

Anyone taking part will also receive a 15 per cent discount at Cotswold Outdoor and the chance to see Wide Horizons’ work at three of its adventure centres.
