A water main erupted in Orpington on Saturday, creating a powerful fountain and drenching nearby workmen.

The dramatic explosion, captured on video by several passers-by, happened at shortly after 11am in Sevenoaks Way.

The jet of water which sprayed away from the busy A road caused flooding on the roads and the carpark nearby.

Staci Bawden, of Station Square in Petts Wood, said she was coming out of Sports Direct with her cousins when they spotted the burst.

The 23-year-old said: "When we came out around 11.15am there was a jet of water hitting a bunch of cars in the car park.

"As we were coming out of the car park we realised the workers must have cut through a water main. The water was so powerful!"

A spokeswoman for Thames Water said: "We’re sorry to those people affected by the burst pipe which was damaged by third party road works.

"Repairs were carried out that day and water supplies were back to normal in the early hours of Sunday morning."
