A couple from Orpington were horrified to discover their salon had been broken into while they holidayed in Majorca.

Iona Waterman, 50, runs Indulgence in Beauty, along Petts Wood Road, but was shocked when she received a call while abroad telling her someone had vandalised her shop.

Someone threw a brick through the front door window, smashing the glass, and stole £300 from the till overnight last Thursday (October 2).

Her husband Jonathan, 44, described it as “distressing” as they were forced to deal with the fall-out while waiting for their flight back to the UK, where they live in St Josephs Close.

Mr Waterman, a toastmaster, added they were ‘nearly in tears’ after getting the news.

He said: “My wife nearly broke down. We can’t believe this happened, we were in a state of shock. It’s a lot of money.

“It’s very nice Petts Wood, that’s why we couldn’t believe it. Everyone has been so kind though.”

Despite the break-in they still opened that day, but pushed some appointments back to the afternoon after staff cleaned up the glass.

The mum-of-three told News Shopper: “We couldn’t believe that someone would actually stoop that low.

“The brick was inside the shop. They got in and had been round the shop because there was glass everywhere obviously from their shoes. They had a good look round, not sure what for.

“We were in shock, it’s never happened before, we’re going to get shutters now.

“The products we sell here are good and we’ve got machines which are quite expensive, I’m surprised they didn’t take that. I suppose they didn’t want the hassle.”

The damage to the shop

The door was initially boarded up but they since had the glass replaced by a local tradesman.

The shop had been up and running for nearly three years without any problems before the incident.

Mrs Waterman added: “Everyone has been so nice, it’s great how the community pulls together. It shows how nice Petts Wood is.”

A spokesman for The Met confirmed they attended the break-in.
