A Beckenham school celebrated their school’s centenary by creating a human sculpture.

Balgowan Primary School, off Balgowan Road, celebrated the big day on Friday (June 26).

Each year group and their teachers dressed in fashions from certain decades – including the 60s, 70s and 80s – and enjoyed a picnic.

The children also re-created a giant '100' in the playground to mark the occasion, and their annual summer party this Saturday (July 4) running from 12-3pm will be themed around the centenary.

But the building was not always a school, as in the autumn of 1915 it was used as a military hospital.

During WWI over 5,000 service men were treated there.

MORE TOP STORIES Headteacher Dr Andrew Swatland said: “The staff and children are thrilled to be celebrating Balgowan's Centenary. The children thoroughly enjoyed the recent birthday party and especially wearing clothes from the decade they were learning about in class.

“One of the highlights of our celebrations was the drone which hovered over the school and filmed the children forming the number '100' and also the Balgowan ship.”

The school is also hosting a re-union to mark the anniversary next Thursday (July 9).

All previous alumni are welcome to attend the event, which costs £10, and runs from 7-9.30pm.

There will be memorabilia and photographs from the school’s past on display.
