A 19 year-old man, who died following a car crash in Grove Park on Sunday evening (June 7), has been named locally as talented footballer and Millwall supporter Daniel Matthews.

Mr Matthews, who was a passenger in a black Vauxhall Corsa which collided with a tree in Burnt Ash Lane, passed away yesterday at an east London hospital.

Emergency services were called to the crash near the junction of Broadlands Road at around 6.20pm and three other people in the car were taken to hospital for treatment.

London Fire Brigade cut two of the 'trapped and injured' patients out of the car which was 'wrapped around a tree'.

Teammates at Mr Matthews’ local football club, Russellers FC, have paid tribute to him on their website.

A statement written by Dave Fone, Russellers FC president, reads: “Dan was a great team player and enjoyed his time with all the players current and old.

“He was always at training unless the Lions were at home.

“I personally will miss his text messages and phone calls about team training, who's attending and who's going to be at the game, he was like my right hand man.

“The photo of the cup final always brings a smile to my face every time I see it, he was so thrilled to play at the final and when he held the cup aloft it was like he was at Wembley with Millwall (His second favourite team of course).

“He was passionate about football, he never gave up, was a great role model and was a credit to his family. RIP Daniel Matthews.”
