A lorry has struck a railway bridge in Beckenham causing traffic chaos and cancellations to Southeastern services until at least 8pm, this evening (May 21).

Police were called shortly before 4pm after a HGV struck the bridge at Elmers End Road and Gwydor Road.

A scaffolding company is assisting with the bridge repairs and significant disruption on the roads and railway is expected as the work is carried out.

Trains between Elmers End and Hayes may be delayed, cancelled or revised as all lines are closed due to the bridge strike.

Elmers End Road is also closed and buses are diverted.

A Met Police spokeswoman said no serious injuries had been reported.

Network Rail engineers are assessing the safety of the bridge.

Rail tickets can be used on London buses between Hayes and Clock House and Hayes and Bromley South at no additional charge.

Passengers can also use Tramlink between Elmers End and East Croydon and Southern rail services between London Bridge and East Croydon.
