An Orpington man has been jailed after a fight broke out on a train.

Samuel Connelly, of Bellfield Road, Orpington, boarded a train at Kings Cross heading towards Cambridge on Monday April 13.

Within minutes Connelly, 27, became loud and aggressive.

He became verbally aggressive towards a male passenger and other commuters who entered the carriage.

Several people, including a family with young children, changed carriages.

Connelly continued being aggressive, asking the male passenger if he wanted to fight.

He then sat opposite a girl and became confrontational, causing her to leave the carriage.

MORE TOP STORIES One passenger tried to distract Connelly while another texted the British Transport Police’s text service, alerting them to the situation.

Connelly asked the passenger using their phone to stop and threatened him with violence.

He then stood on a seat, punched someone in the face before grabbing them by the neck and pushing him against the glass.

When the train arrived at Royston Connelly was arrested.

Inspector Steve Cowley said: “A train carriage can be a very uncomfortable place to be if there is crime or anti-social behaviour taking place and 61016 gives people a way to contact us quickly and discreetly.

“I would urge all rail passengers to save 61016 to their mobile phone.

“We will text you back if we need more information and will always send you a text to let you know what happened as a result.”

Connelly pleaded guilty to common assault and provocation of violence.

He was sentenced on Wednesday (May 13) at North Herts Magistrates Court to 32 weeks in prison and was fined £150 and a £80 victim surcharge.
