Firefighters have tackled a blaze, which damaged six cars and completely destroyed a hedge in Petts Wood, this afternoon.

Emergency crews were called at around 1pm to reports of 25 metres of hedgerow and five cars alight at Petts Wood Station car park.

Passersby, who gathered in the car park behind Station Square, captured video footage showing black smoke billowing above tall, bright flames.

Witnesses say embers from burning rubbish in the garden of one of the houses backing onto the car park is believed to have set the hedge on fire.

Julian Ali, 28, a builder working on a nearby house, said “It started just after lunch – about one o’clock.

“They have been burning all their debris in the garden for a few days. They have been burning rubbish in a little container.

“It started in the corner over there; the trees just went up in flames.

“It just caught alight. It went up pretty quickly.”

Richard Ince, of Hollingworth Road, said he was driving down Queensway when he saw a big plume of smoke.

The 42-year-old said: “I parked up and I saw people congregating at the top of the station steps.

“I went to have a closer look and to see if there was anything I could do as my first concern was that it was somebody’s house alight.

“You could see the fire raging away. You could hear the car tyres burst."

The flames damaged a Honda, a Mercedes, a Jaguar and three other cars.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the hedgerow was completely destroyed and six motor vehicles damaged.
