The theft of motorbikes and mopeds in Bromley has risen 89 per cent in one year.

Figures released by the Met Police show 158 mopeds, scooters or motorcycles were taken in the 2013-14 financial year, compared to 298.

The borough ranks 15th overall in London for theft of the vehicles, with Wandsworth topping the list at 695, compared to Harrow with the lowest at 41.

In a bid to tackle the rise in crime, Operation Venice has been launched with police across the capital undertaking a day of action today (April 22).

As other vehicles become more secure, police say criminals are increasingly turning to mopeds and other two wheeled vehicles.

The figures show 9,900 scooters and motorcycles were stolen in London over the last year, equating to 27 a day.

MORE TOP STORIES Theories suggest criminal gangs are targeting new high power motorbikes - worth up to £15,000 - which can be easily broken down into parts, usually by lifting them into a van, cutting chains or breaking the steering locks.

In contrast, lower powered vehicles are usually stolen through hotwiring techniques, usually joyriding them or using them as a getaway vehicle.

Across south east London officers will be handing out leaflets and giving information on how to keep mopeds and motorcycles secure.

They will also be conducting raids on those suspected of stealing mopeds and scooters.

Detective Superintendent Raffaele D’Orsi who leads Operation Venice said: “We are committed to taking every opportunity to divert, disrupt, detect and prosecute those involved in moped, scooter and motor cycle related criminality.

“This robust and collaborative response will ensure more offenders are brought to justice, and through industry engagement the vehicles are better protected with improved security measures”.
