A woman was ‘seriously’ sexually assaulted in a park in Penge.

Officers from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command are investigating a serious sexual assault against a woman.

The assault is alleged to have happened in the early hours of Saturday (March 21) morning, around 3.20am.

MORE TOP STORIES It was reported Penge recreation ground, off the High Street, was cordoned off by police on Saturday following the incident.

Neighbour Jane O’Connor said: “I come here every day, its dangerous now. It never used to be. They don’t have CCTV; there should be.

“I definitely don’t come here at night, it’s far too dangerous.

Ms O'Connor, from Maple Road, said: “The park was cordoned off, it was unusual. They said a woman had been assaulted.

“I live right opposite and it’s not unusual to hear sirens up and down here."

The pensioner added: “My house directly looks onto the park, but I didn’t hear anything that night. It’s not safe here anymore.

"It’s so sad, but I’m not shocked this has happened. It’s quite scary though.”

A spokesman for the Met Police confirmed no one has been arrested and enquiries continue.
