An investigation into alleged sex abuse by Jimmy Savile at a Beckenham hospital in 1980 was inconclusive, according to a report published today (February 26).

A young girl had told an unnamed staff member Savile touched her breast as she sat on his lap during his visit to a new ward at the Bethlem Royal Hospital on September 18 in 1980.

The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s report says it was not possible to substantiate the allegation against Savile.

The allegation came to light in June last year, after the trust, and other NHS trusts across the country produced a report into the contact Savile may have had with its patients.

The investigation failed to track down the alleged victim or any further witnesses who could corroborate the account of the informant.

To the trust’s knowledge, it was Savile’s only visit to the hospital.

The report says: “Today the Trust has in place robust safeguarding policies, policies and procedures, together with mandatory safeguarding training, which significantly reduce the risk of a similar incident from occurring in the future.”
