Yobs rampaged through the streets of Penge torching vehicles and setting rubbish bins alight in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The suspects set fire to a delivery van behind the Iceland store at the Blenheim Shopping Centre on Penge High Street just before 2.10am.

As firefighters were extinguishing the blaze, local resident Penelope Else dialled 999 at 2.19am to report rubbish bins engulfed in flames in nearby Evelina Road.

Minutes later, a member of the public called London Fire Brigade again to report a torched car just a few streets away, on Torr Road.

Three other vehicles were also damaged by the fires.

Ms Else told News Shopper: “My neighbour called me just after 2am. He was just about to go to bed when he suddenly saw the van on fire outside.

“There was no danger to us as it was quite some distance away.

“But there was a big bang – a big boom.

“The flames were incredible.”

The 53-year-old said she had ventured out to help direct the fire officers towards the van blaze when she spotted the bins on alight nearby.

She added: “The burning rubber and plastic meant it became extremely fumey. I was coughing and spluttering terribly.

“The next day I had a god awful headache. I don’t know how the fire brigade do it.

“It can be quite a dodgy area at times. I am just hoping the police are following this up.”

Fire crews quickly extinguished the blazes.

A Met Police spokesperson said no arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
