A Penge man has been jailed after officers discovered a Scorpion sub-machine gun at his house.

Arjuna Pookraj, 28, of Mosslea Road, was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of prohibited ammunition, possession of a firearm without a certificate and possession of cannabis.

Police found the haul - which included a silencer and magazine of ammunition - hidden behind curtains in Pookraj's bedroom.

His house was searched on September 16 last year after officers in Brixton passed a car smelling strongly of cannabis with three men inside.

After searching the trio they found a quantity of cannabis, approximately £4,000 in cash and number of what was believed to be stolen bank cards.

A number of houses were searched as a result of this.

DC Susan Temple, from the Met's Trident Gang Command, said "Working in conjunction with borough colleagues we have ensured that a man involved in gun crime has been jailed and an extremely dangerous firearm has been taken off the streets of London.

"The arrest and conviction of Arjuna Pookraj demonstrates Trident's continued commitment to target dangerous criminals concerned in gangs and firearm criminality".

Pookraj pleaded guilty at Inner London Crown Court on January 5, and was sentenced on January 26.
