Children's toys at Santa’s grotto in Orpington’s Walnuts shopping centre have been withdrawn over safety fears.

Bromley trading standards has issued a warning to parents after removing hundreds of toy light-up rings.

A parent became concerned after seeing the gifts - which were being given to children as part of their Santa visit - and reported them to Bromley Council officers.

The flashing rings are powered by a small battery, and there are fears they can break easily leaving the small batteries exposed.

If a child swallowed the battery it could cause choking, internal bleeding and even death.

Trading standards visited the shopping centre and spoke to the management and company in charge of the event.

Both co-operated fully with the officers and handed over stock of around 350 rings.

Head of trading standards and community safety Rob Vale said: "We think these products do not comply with the requirements of toy safety regulations.

"We would urge parents to look out for these products and if they have bought any, return them to the place of purchase for a refund."

Similar rings have been the subject of a national alert and recommended to be withdrawn.
