A man has died in a house fire in Orpington.

Emergency services were called to a house in Tower Road, Orpington, just after 2pm.

Upon arrival they found the lounge on fire, and the body of a 79-year-old man who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A 40-year-old neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "I just came home saw an ambulance, fire engines and a couple of police cars.

"It was just before 3pm, there was one of those black paramedic cars as well.

"I didn't know him. I'm just really really sorry. It's so horrible, I'm so sorry for the family."

The London Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team also attended.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Firefighters were called to a house fire on Tower Road in Orpington BR6 this afternoon.

"Crews put out a small fire in the property’s lounge where they found the body of a man.

"Sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Two fire engines and 14 firefighters and officers from Orpington and Sidcup fire stations attended the incident.

"The Brigade was called at 1406 and the incident was over by 1512.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 1.55pm to Tower Road, Orpington, to reports of a fire.

"We sent a number of our staff to the scene, but sadly a man was dead at the scene."

Neighbours at the scene comforted each other, as an investigation of the man's house was underway.

Police confirmed his death was not being treated as suspicious, and next of kin have been informed.
