A man was hospitalised after his car smashed into an electricity pole in Biggin Hill which knocked out power to nearby houses.

The blue Suzuki collided with the telegraph pole along Jail Lane just after 9am on Sunday morning.

The man, thought to be 21, received a head injury and was taken to a hospital with a major trauma centre.

The pole was carrying 'low voltage electricity lines', and no one came into contact with electricity, UK Power Networks confirmed.

All emergency services were called to the scene, with a spokesman for the London Fire Brigade confirming no one was trapped.

The London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.42am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car on Jail Lane near Bromley.

"We sent an ambulance crew to the scene.

"We treated a man reported to be 21 years old for a head injury.

"He was taken as a priority to Kings College Hospital, a major trauma centre."

The accident happened outside The Old Jail Pub, which witnesses claim was without power after the incident.

The now written-off car initially hit a hedge before coming to a stop at the 10 metre tall post.

The smash took out the power supply to six homes, but engineers from UK Power Networks had to isolate the power to a further 136 customers to fix the problem.

This included replacing the entire pole - using a lorry mounted crane - with the juice finally restored by nearly 10pm.
