BORIS Johnson is being urged to put his money where his mouth is and find the £800m needed to extend the DLR to Bromley.

In his 2020 Vision document the Mayor of London outlines his proposals for the capital and these include bringing the Docklands Light Railway to the borough.

Bromley Council is fully behind the proposal and says it could be built and up and running by 2022 if funding is secured.

Council leader Councillor Stephen Carr said: “We call upon the mayor to commit fully to securing the funding for this scheme as a matter of urgency.

“Such an extension is the priority of the borough, more important and significant than other option, it will being greater opportunities for our borough and south east generally.

“Unlike many parts of the capital, south east London, and Bromley borough in particular, have not seen any new major infrastructure projects of this sort for many years.”

A Transport for London (TfL) pre-feasibility study revealed the cost of extending the DLR to Bromley would be £800m, which is 5.4 per cent of the estimated costs of Crossrail and 2.4 per cent of the cost of High Speed 2.

And portfolio holder for the environment Cllr Colin Smith said: “This will bring major transport benefits to not just our borough or region but also to London as a whole.

“It will reduce congestion at central London termini, relieve chronic pressure on the Jubilee line and address historic imbalances in London’s public transport infrastructure.

“It will also support economic growth both locally and further afield too.

“We need to turn this vision into reality without the delays that notoriously dog infrastructure projects.”

TfL’s managing director of planning, Michele Dix, said: "The mayor has always been clear about his support for enhancing transport infrastructure in South London such as through Tramlink, Tube and DLR expansions where possible.

“Although there is no funding currently available for the scheme, this is under active discussion between TfL and Bromley Council, and we are working together to look at the technical case, economic justifications, and possible funding structures.

“This more detailed piece of work will be complete later this summer."
