PLANS for a Chislehurst youth shelter have been shelved after the council failed to reach agreement with residents.

Bromley Council had awarded a £4,000 grant towards the project and Edgebury Action Group took the lead in developing the project however the grant has now been withdrawn.

The shelter was intended to be a place for young people to meet and socialise in the hope anti social behaviour could be reduced and further facilities could be developed.

In February last year people were asked for their views on the youth centre, which was to be located in Belmont Lane and 48 per cent voted against the shelter compared to 38 per cent who were in favour.

Edgebury Action Group Chair Councillor Ian Payne wrote to residents in April to inform them the shelter would not be created but would be re-visited in six months time.

A Bromley Council spokesperson said: "The application for a new youth shelter in Chislehurst was considered by the Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Safety.

"Whilst supportive of the proposed work and the principles underpinning it, the Portfolio Holder was unable to secure adequate answers to important questions relating to location and ongoing management of the proposed shelter.

"Should these concerns be addressed there is nothing to stop a further application for funds being made in the future."
