Weather latest: Big freeze to last all week

SNOW is expected to continue to fall in the region for the next week, with no end of the big freeze in immediate sight.

The prediction of prolonged cold weather will bring a further chill to commuters and holidaymakers after two days of snow brought airports and transport networks to a shuddering halt.

Up to 6cm of snow is forecast to fall across the area today and up to 10cm could fall in local areas, and 15cm on higher ground, weather experts said.

The snow will become heavier as the day continues and east or northeasterly winds will make it feel bitter with the maximum temperature reaching 0C.

Tonight the snow is expected to clear leaving a cloudy and mostly dry night.

It will remain icy and cold with a widespread frost and the minimum temperature will be around -4C.

Tomorrow it will be cold and mostly cloudy with some sleet and snow at times.

The maximum temperature will be around 0C.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for ice for much of the country and advised people to take extra care as snow turns to ice in the sub-zero conditions.

Among rail services, Eurostar is warning all trains will be delayed today, with a number of services to and from Paris and Brussels cancelled.

Southern will run an amended timetable tomorrow because of forecast snow and Southeastern passengers are advised to check its live running page on its website before travelling.

Yes, it's time to play snow-moan bingo!

- "Why oh why are we so un-prepared in this country. In Sweden they get six feet of snow and clear it wihtin five minutes."
- "I haven't seen a gritter for weeks."
- "Pathetic they can't even be bothered to do my cul-de-sac off a side road of a side road.
- "The grit bin in our road is empty - I'm getting through two bucketfuls a day with my driveway - where am I supposed to get it from?"
- "The pavement outside my house is snowy/icy and no-one from the caaaancil has been round to clear it."
- "Why should *I* clear it?"
_ "The entire council should resign in disgrace."
- "Why is the school closed? The teachers should be living on-site - on the hard floors if need be, lazy s*ds."

I lived in Germany for many years and life carries on as normal with 10 inches of snow and -15C. They have colder winters, much more snow and for longer period of time. All public transport works, kids still cycle to school, roads are always clear, You are personally legally responsible for the frontage of your house to be clear of snow, all cars must have winter tyres. It works very efficiently. England makes excuses for not wanting to carry on as normal

considering how rarely we get significant snow falls round here, I'm pretty pleased that they don't waste a few million buying snow ploughs.

If they did, it would be a colossal mismanagement of money.

Roads with snow are fine to drive on with consideration and careful driving. the problem comes when granny wants to drive at 5mph on a clear road because there's some snow on the pavement!
