New job for South London Healthcare Trust special administrator Matthew Kershaw
12:17pm Wednesday 16th January 2013 in Bromley By Heloise Wood
Mathew Kershaw
TRUST special administrator Matthew Kershaw will become chief executive of a large teaching hospital later this year.
Mr Kershaw has led the failure process at the South London Healthcare Trust since it went into administration last July and will take up the post at the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust in the spring.
South London Healthcare Trust was put on the unsustainable providers regime after losing £1m a week and Mr Kewshaw was tasked with getting it onto safer footing. It was the first hospital trust to be placed in this kind of regime.
The most recent report from Mr Kershaw on the future of the Trust’s health services was published on January 8. One of the most controversial recommendations is the closure of Lewisham Hospital’s A&E.
The document also suggested the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough should be acquired by King's College Hospital NHS Trust and there needed to be £74.9m in efficiency savings.
Health secretary Jeremy Hunt will make a decision on the report in early February.
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals chairman Julian Lee said:“I am extremely pleased that Matthew has agreed to be our new Chief Executive.
"Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals is a young and dynamic teaching hospital with a number of extremely exciting developments planned and already in train; not least the £420 million redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital campus which involves the replacement of some of the oldest buildings in the country which still house wards and clinical services.
"Matthew’s track record demonstrates that he is an effective, visionary leader and undoubtedly the person to direct the next chapter in the BSUH story.”

Kershaw could NOt manage his own bloated £4m budget!
Failed to ensure complance with life saving fire regulations & Health & Safety laws at Orpington Hospital & I guess elsewhere in the Trust as well.
Has galvanised & united oppsition to his nonsensencical proposals right across SE London..
If Hunt upholds the proposals then it will go to High Court for JR as Kershaw has overstepped his remit by including Lewisham in his SLHT propsals..
Presided over PRUH failing Quality Care standard on medicine management.
Completed the.destruction of Queen Marys Hospital that the Tories said they woul fight for(where are Boris, Cleverly & Broken promises now-Hiding not Marching)that only 2 years ago a busy A&E & well functioning & effecient wards..
Further undermined the confidence & moral of an excellent staff group
with unfounde & unevidenced criticisms as well as 140 clinical redundancies..
United clinicians in opposition to his propsals that would lead to closure of Beckenhasm Beacon, closure A&E at PRU & a currently overstretched/underr
esourced A&E at Woolwich being completely swamped.
Yes Kershaw has done a great job for SE London & will put ALL our lives at risk if his dosy report is implemented!!

I can only assume in the circumstances that Petra69 comments are a spoof as indeed the article on Kershaw has to be.

They are all arrogant and treat the rest of us (patients, public and voluntary organisations) as mindless idiots when we raise objections to their constant "quick fixes" that just get us deeper and deeper into the quagmire.
We fought against PFI - we fought against APoH - we fought against the merger of QMS, QEH & PRUH ... we were ignored, despite the reasoned arguments that we put forward, and we are now having to pay the price of their arrogant dismissive behaviour towards us.
When I see top management still in their highly paid positions, knowing their bad management has been the cause of the shambles we now have, it makes me angry ....... there is NO accountability for failure. They retain their jobs or move on to pastures greener.
Mr Kershaw has done his dirty job as hatchet man and is now going to leave us to suffer the consequences of his ill thought out recommendations which are based on questionable financial information, "assumptions" and "aspirations". He's the only one who has profited from this dubious consultation.
